Void Space Calculation (Over-length)

Image
If the cargo exceeds a length of 11.6 to 11.7 meters, the front and rear corner posts(end walls) of a 40' flat rack can be laid flat. This forms a flatbed onto which the cargo can be loaded.

Void Space Calculation (OW, OH)

Image
Out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo, in which the cargo protrudes from the Flat racks or Open tops upon loading, will result in VOID Space when loaded onto a container ship. VOID space may vary depending on the nature of the cargo and the loading situation on the ship, but carriers generally calculate it as illustrated in the table below in order to secure space on the vessel and reflect the void charge in the ocean freight rate.

Out-gauge of Open tops

While a flat rack can have out-gauge in the side-to-side, upward, and front-to-back directions, an open top container only has an out-gauge, termed Over-height (OH), in the upward direction.

There are three types of out-gauge conditions that can occur with flat racks: ① Over-height (OH) ② Over-width (OW) ③ Over-length (OL)
